Happy new week,
Yesterday was the second iteration of Alex Iwobi’s Project 17 Cup, and first iteration of the Project 17 U12 Cup and it was nothing short of extraordinary. The day kicked off with an exciting under-12s tournament in the morning, followed by a professional tournament in the afternoon, all held at Enfield College. The event was open to everyone and saw an impressive turnout of over 1,000 attendees, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. The star-studded event featured the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Calvin Bassey, among others.
The P17 Cup was designed as a family-friendly event, providing entertainment for attendees of all ages. Activities included skill challenges, face painting, 1v1 showcase and live DJ performances. The tournament itself featured 12 teams competing in a cup format, with teams comprising professional players, grassroots teams, and popular platforms such as Baiteeze Squad, SE Dons, 90’s Baby Podcast, and Ballers in God.
Project 17 is the brainchild of premier league footballer Alex Iwobi who is deeply committed to leveraging his influence to foster cultural and societal progress for marginalised communities. This commitment led him to establish Project 17, a personal initiative aimed at educating, empowering, and inspiring his community, fans, and the youth. Project 17 represents more than just Iwobi's efforts on the field; it encompasses his community work and other passions such as music and fashion.
All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to The Christian Mbulu Charity, a cause very close to Iwobi's heart. This charity provides support for individuals between the ages of 13-18 and professional footballers as they navigate their journeys through life. The charity was formed after the sudden death of former professional footballer Christian Mbulu in 2020 at the age of 23. The charity was also represented in the tournament through The CM Trust.
Events like the Project 17 Day are crucial for building stronger communities. They offer athletes like Iwobi and partner brands a unique opportunity to connect with fans at a grassroots level, demonstrating their commitment to social responsibility and community support.
“It’s always great to give back to my community, they are the people that support me throughout the season, so I love finding a way to give back during my off-season.” Alex Iwobi
Divrse Media planning this event with Project 17 was all about creating a family-friendly environment and a holistic experience. Working with players like Alex Iwobi has been inspiring, as his dedication to his community and passion for giving back are truly remarkable. Together, we aimed to ensure that everyone had an enjoyable day filled with fun, football, and a sense of togetherness. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our partners, Instagram, Cano Water, Cawston Press, Popeyes, NNEsaga and Redbull.
The 2024 Project 17 Cup was a resounding success, highlighting the power of community and the importance of giving back. This tournament marked the kickoff of our Summer of Sports series, designed to create unique, engaging, and exciting experiences for inner-city Londoners, encouraging greater participation in sports throughout the summer.
