Happy Bank Holiday Monday!
So many of us are caught in the grind of work, responsibilities, and ongoing stress that sometimes we forget to take time out to rest. Rest is a fundamental part of success, health, and happiness. The human body can’t thrive without rest, taking a break, even if it's for a few minutes, gives you the energy you need to go further. Rest is vital for better mental health, increased concentration and memory, a healthier immune system, reduced stress, and an improved mood.
Ask any athlete and they will tell you rest is essential for physical training. Rest is needed for muscles to repair themselves and prevent injury. Just like athletes rest is necessary for us to have a balanced and healthy life.
The benefits of rest:
It is an opportunity for reflection - Sometimes it is hard to see the forest through the trees. It is even more difficult to see the forest when we are running through the trees. Rest allows us to step back and evaluate everything. It is an opportunity to examine ourselves, practice gratitude and see areas for improvement.
Improves productivity - You are not functioning at your best when your body is fatigued or if you’re burnt out. You are always more productive after a restful period because your mind has been given the opportunity to refocus and rejuvenate.
Increase in creativity - Too much stress and activity can disconnect you from your creative potential. When you take time to rest and relax, you are naturally more creative. Time off helps you refill your reserves. The quiet moments inspire reflection time, allowing you to break through creative barriers. Have you ever struggled with a problem, slept on it, and woke and cracked the code? That’s what rest does.
Not getting enough rest can have some minor consequences such as fatigue, exhaustion, mood changes, and difficulty focusing. However, there are some major health consequences such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure, stroke, obesity, depression, and immunity issues. Rest doesn’t just help our physical health but also mental and emotional health.
You have to be intentional about your rest. Plan when you want to take a rest, block your calendar, and learn to say no to tasks on your rest days. We are in charge of our lives, you are only as busy as you choose to be. You can only work so hard and do so much in a day. Everybody needs to rest and recharge. If you can, use this bank holiday as an opportunity to rest and recharge.
