Happy new week!
I hope you had a Merry Christmas. I can’t believe 2022 is nearly done. Time is flying and unless you stop and take time to reflect it’s hard to learn from your experiences.
“We do not learn from experience...we learn from reflecting on experience.” ― John Dewey
I’m always excited for a new year because it’s a fresh start. An opportunity to learn from the past year and do things differently in the new year. You can’t change the things that have happened this year but you can learn from them.
I learnt a lot of things in 2022. Here are my top 3 lessons.
Opportunity Cost - My word for 2023 will definitely be ‘No’. Everything you say YES to in this life means saying NO to something else. This can apply to every scenario in your life. When making decisions, make sure it’s not going to cost you more than it’ll benefit you. Even if it’s free there’s still a cost!
Consistency Compounds - I speak about compounding pretty often because it’s one of my favourite principles. It’s hard to see progress sometimes unless it’s right in your face. Little by little, a little becomes a lot, so even when it looks like you’re not making progress, you are. So going to the gym a few times a week, eating less, reading more, putting yourself out there more, even if you don’t see the gains straightaway, people do. Keep being consistent, your little actions are creating something big. Progress happens over time, not at once.
Showing up every day doesn’t look the same - I struggled to understand this until towards the end of the year. I had some super productive days, some not so productive days, and some “what am I doing” days. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you don’t feel at your most productive, as long as you’re showing up in some sort of way, you’re investing in your future self.
“Judge each day, not by the harvest you reap but the seeds you plant.”
If you need pointers on things for your reflection. Here are a few things to reflect on.
What did you learn this year?
What gave you energy this year?
What drained your energy this year?
Who showed up for you this year?
Who did you show up for this year?
What did you not do this year because of fear?
What did you enjoy the most this year?
What will you do differently next year?
I try not to focus much on what went wrong but it’s important to have an honest self-assessment to truly grow. As long as this year was better than last year that’s progress, even if it wasn’t, you should be proud of yourself for making it through the year. Plan ahead for the new year, declare your intentions, and commit to them.
I just want to say a big thank you to every one of you that has subscribed, shared, and read any of my newsletters this year. Your support doesn’t go unnoticed. I wish you all the best in 2023, I pray it’s your best year yet!
Have a great week!
